What to Put on an Invoice in Australia: The ATO Checklist

Miss a required field and your invoice isn't a valid tax invoice. Here's everything that has to be on it — and what speeds up payment.

An invoice that's missing the right fields isn't just unprofessional — if it's meant to be a tax invoice, it might not be valid. Here's what the ATO expects, and what gets you paid faster.

What a Valid Tax Invoice Needs

The words **"Tax Invoice"** clearly displayed.

Your business name and **ABN**.

The date the invoice was issued.

A description of what you supplied (the work or goods).

The **GST amount**, shown separately, or a statement that the total includes GST.

The buyer's identity or ABN for invoices over $1,000.

Make It Easy to Get Paid

**The faster you make payment, the faster the money lands.** Put your payment details where the client can't miss them:

BSB and account number.

PayID — many clients find it the quickest option.

Clear payment terms (e.g. "Due within 7 days").

Number Every Invoice

Use a sequential invoice number. It keeps your records clean at tax time and makes it obvious if one goes missing.
